“Spiritual Habits of Love”
This Winter, we’ll take a topical look at who we are as Jesus’ followers by our spiritual habits.
Let me explain a little.
Those being formed as Jesus’ followers eventually resemble Jesus. Living as Jesus’ followers includes ongoing lifestyle changes and life-long ways of being, or habits. Many list Bible reading, prayer, church attendance, use of the sacraments and fellowship. But to get to what following Jesus looks like, it starts with Jesus. Here’s where we’ll ask ourselves what we think and feel about Jesus.
Then, living as Jesus’ followers moves to how Jesus addresses humans, at the heart level, meaning with what they love or care about. Here’s where we’ll ask what we really live for and why.
Last, living as Jesus’ followers looks like Jesus. Here’s where we’ll ask what our spiritual habits show about love for Jesus. And how we use those less-than-spiritual times. And how we love our neighbors by our spiritual habits. Which really opens up what our spiritual habits are for. Which is not ever just about me being a ‘good Christian’ in a vacuum. This is what we’re up to each Sunday this Winter in public worship. We will not address every possible habit.
So if you’re tired of spiritual disciplines that don’t seem to help much, or the low level guilt that comes with New Year’s resolutions, or the old standby ‘it doesn’t matter what I do’ which is never true in God’s glorious and eternal cosmos, then this series is for you and your neighbors.
